Member Spotlight: Interview with Dr. Maz Ghodsian

We’re continuing our conversation with member physicians and groups about their success. This week we’re featuring a conversation between LACMA CEO Gustavo Friederichsen and  Maziar Ghodsian, D.O., J.D., F.C.L.M at La Peer Health Systems.

LACMA: What is your approach and/or philosophy to medicine?

Dr. Ghodsian:  Ethics. Evidence based. Empathy.

LACMA:  What is your specialty?

Dr. Ghodsian: Pain free hemorrhoid(s) removal.

LACMA: How long have you been practicing medicine?

Dr. Ghodsian: Since June of 2005.

LACMA:  What are doing currently that is unique? Innovative? Of value to referring MDs?

Dr. Ghodsian:  I have a large patient population with hemorrhoids that are unable to live due to the pain and embarrassment they suffer. I am now offering virtual consultations and “house calls.” My patients employing these services have been thrilled.

LACMA: Why did you choose to perform surgeries at LPHS with so many other options?

Dr. Ghodsian: The extremely low infection rate attracted me to LPHS. Providing the best possible medical care truly takes a village and LPHS ensures the best possible surgical outcomes.

LACMA: What types of cases are you seeing more of, less of?

Dr. Ghodsian: I am seeing an increase in cosmetic anal skin tags and anal warts. I am seeing less IBS cases, perhaps due to greater patient education.

LACMA: What do you do that others (say Gastroenterologists) can’t do?

Dr. Ghodsian: Same day testing and same day treatment for anal pain, hemorrhoids, anal fissures, anal abscess, pilonidal cysts- both surgical and non-surgical.

LACMA: What is the biggest misconception about your specialty? Why?

Dr. Ghodsian: Proctologists are very different than Gastroenterologists – often times I find that people think our medical disciplines are very similar. Gastroenterologists treat symptoms non surgically whereas Proctologists can provide both the non-surgical and the surgical treatment.

LACMA:  What are you excited about?

Dr. Ghodsian:Advances in hemorrhoid surgery, making it as pain free for the patient excite me.  Also, High Resolution Anoscopy for our female patients who have HPV with a history of an abnormal pap smear that require Anal Pap Smears is of great interest to be because these women are not being screened for anal cancer by their OB/GYN’s and developing anal cancer.

LACMA: How many cases do you perform each week? Month?

Dr. Ghodsian:   20 surgeries a month

LACMA: What else would you like to add?

Dr. Ghodsian: I would like to thank LACMA for embracing my medical practice. I am honored to be a part of the community and have found unity among my peers. There is no place on the planet that I would prefer to practice medicine.
