Kaiser Permanente Thrive – Find Your Words Campaign

What does hip hop have to do with depression? A beautifully shot interactive Internet campaign by Kaiser Permanente Thrive Find Your Words uses lyrics from Compton rapper Kendrick Lamar to bring awareness to depression and share resources.

#FindYourWords shows young people reciting the lyrics and encourages anyone watching the videos to read along.

When Kaiser Permanente released the video, they pointed to some of the alarming statistics around depression.

Depression and other mental health issues are common and touch nearly all of our lives, directly or through connections to friends, family, or colleagues. But it can be hard to talk about, even with loved ones.

More than 1 in 5 adults in the United States live with a mental health condition, including about 14.8 million adults who live with major depression. Approximately 20 percent of youth ages 13 to 18 have experienced or will experience a mental health condition. In approximately 5 percent, the condition will be severe.

But treatment works, and there is hope.

It can be difficult to reach people suffering from depression. We’re pleased to share¬†such an innovative campaign and hope that you’ll pass it along to anyone – whether a loved one or patient – who might feel alone and despairing.

Final word? The song ends with the words I love myself.
