Member Spotlight: Past LACMA President Troy Elander, MD
There are many different ways that LACMA members get involved with the organization. We’re grateful to Troy Elander, MD for finding his way into an editorial advisory position and helping with the LACMA publications. We asked him how his involvement with LACMA has evolved over the years.
“…my involvement with the PNN advisory board started when I was LACMA President- about six years ago. We just formed a new partnership with Reo [Carr] and his communication staff [at Physicians News Network]. They took over the publishing of the Physician magazine and started this new online presence with PNN. This was exciting because it allowed us to communicate weekly and whenever a big story came out. We wanted to highlight Los Angeles doctors and get the word out about their accomplishments. Also, we wanted to focus on local newsworthy items of interest to us here in LA county. We thought having a physician on the advisory board was a good idea to give the doctor’s perspective- would doctors be interested in a certain subject; are there aspects of a certain story that Reo and his associates might not be aware of; are there local stories which they need to know- that sort of thing. I am happy to be a part of the team because I really believe in having better communication with our members. If I can lend a slightly different perspective as a physician, I am happy to do so.
Post-Presidency, I have been on the Patient Care Foundation Board which I love- especially for the Los Angeles Healthcare Awards, which we put on each fall. We are able to recognize great achievements of our local physicians and hand out scholarships to deserving medical students who come from underserved areas. A real win win.”
Dr. Elander is an ophthalmologist in private practice in Santa Monica. The practice was started by his father more than 50 years ago. We’re looking forward to another wonderful event with the Patient Care Foundation this fall and we’d like to thank Dr. Elander for his continued, enthusiastic support for LACMA.
